Zhangjiajie Seven Star Mountain (Qixing Mountain): An Honest Guide for Foreign Visitors
Seven Star Mountain (Qixing Mountain, 张家界七星山) sits just across the valley from Tianmen Mountain — and at 1,528 meters, it’s actually 10 meters taller. Most visitors to Zhangjiajie don’t know that yet. That gap between what this mountain is and how little attention it gets is exactly why we wrote this guide.
This guide covers what Qixing Mountain actually is, what it does well, where it falls short, and whether it belongs on your itinerary. We’d rather give you an honest picture than a glossy one.

2. What Is Qixing Mountain?

Qixing Mountain sits in the southern part of Zhangjiajie’s urban area, roughly 15–18 km from the city center. It faces Tianmen Mountain across a deep valley — the two peaks are about 2,200 meters apart as the crow flies — and at 1,528.6 meters, Qixing Mountain is actually 10 meters taller.
That surprises most people.
The mountain is a karst isolated-peak plateau, a geological formation described as extremely rare worldwide. Four sides drop away in sheer cliffs of 500–700 meters. The top is not a single peak but a massive saddle-shaped plateau averaging 1,400 meters in elevation, dotted with seven higher summits arranged in the pattern of the Big Dipper. Those seven peaks — Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang, and Yaoguang — give the mountain its name.
At 92% forest cover, standing at the summit on the right day feels genuinely remote, despite the cable car and the glass observation deck below your feet.
In 2022 the site was designated a provincial-level tourist resort. Development has moved fast since then — sometimes faster than the visitor experience can keep up with, as we’ll discuss below.
3. Our Honest Assessment
Most English content about Qixing Mountain is either fresh hype or nonexistent. After visiting repeatedly across different seasons and bringing clients of many different types here, this is what we actually think.
What it does well
The cloud sea. At 1,400+ meters on a flat plateau, Qixing Mountain is one of the most reliable places in Zhangjiajie to witness a full cloud sea — the phenomenon where low valleys fill completely with mist while the summit stands in clear sunlight above it all. We’ve seen it on autumn mornings so still that the clouds looked solid, like you could walk out onto them. Nothing in Wulingyuan offers this particular view at this particular altitude.
The Via Ferrata is genuinely serious. The Big Rock Wall (大岩壁) route is not a tourist attraction dressed up as climbing. The Sky Ladder (凌云天梯) is 168 meters of iron rungs bolted into a vertical cliff face at roughly 1,480 meters, with nearly 1,000 meters of rock falling away below. The Hunan provincial government has cited it alongside the World Wingsuit League Championship as part of Zhangjiajie’s international adventure tourism identity. That’s not marketing copy — there are now two full Big Rock Wall routes and two separate via ferrata experiences in the sinkhole and cave systems below the plateau.
Fewer crowds than the big parks. For now, at least. Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain absorb the bulk of Zhangjiajie’s tourist traffic. Qixing Mountain still sees a fraction of that footfall, which means shorter queues and a calmer experience on most days.
Real variety for adventurous travelers. Cloud Swing, cliff jumping, cave via ferrata, sinkhole descent, an outdoor ski resort in winter — for visitors who want more than sightseeing, there is now a genuinely full day’s worth of activity here.
Where it falls short
For pure sightseeing, it’s good but not great. The 1520 Sky Eye glass platform is striking — but glass observation decks now exist across China. The plank roads are pleasant. The views are wide. The “wow” moment that Wulingyuan delivers through its sandstone pillars, or Tianmen delivers through the natural arch and the cable car approach, isn’t quite matched by the standard sightseeing circuit here. If you’ve come to Zhangjiajie for the Avatar-landscape scenery, go to Wulingyuan first.
Weather is a real risk. The mountain sits in a cloud band for much of the year. We have brought clients here on clear days with 100-kilometer panoramas, and on days where visibility dropped below 50 meters and the cable car couldn’t run. Unlike Tianmen Mountain, where the dramatic cable car approach justifies the trip in almost any weather, Qixing Mountain’s sightseeing value collapses in poor visibility. Check the forecast on the morning of your visit.
Development is still catching up. On our most recent visits, parts of the site still felt like a work in progress — expansion construction, unfinished paths near the ski resort area. The bones are excellent. The finish is uneven.
English support is limited. Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain have had years of international visitor pressure and now offer reasonable English signage and multilingual booking support. At Qixing Mountain, operations are Chinese-first throughout. The Via Ferrata guide teams are competent and patient, but for anything beyond the cable car and sightseeing circuit, expect to need a Chinese-speaking contact or a translator.
4. Two Experiences Worth Knowing in Detail
The Cloud Sea at Dawn

On a clear autumn morning, the cable car opens at 08:30. If you’re on the first or second gondola up, you can reach the 1520 Sky Eye platform while the valleys below are still filled with white mist. The plateau is in full sunlight. The mist shifts slowly. Tianmen Mountain appears and disappears across the valley.
One of our guides, Xiao Li, who has been taking groups up this mountain since it first opened, describes it like this: “In Wulingyuan you look across at the peaks. Here you look down at the world. They’re completely different feelings.“
By 10 AM, most days, the mist has burned off and the moment has passed. It’s still a good view. But it’s just a view.
If the cloud sea is your reason for coming, arrive early or stay the night somewhere nearby. Don’t rely on afternoon visits.
The Big Rock Wall Via Ferrata

In late 2023 we took a group of eight foreign visitors — ages 28 to 51, mixed fitness levels, none with prior via ferrata experience — on Route 1 (the Sky Ladder). One of them, a 47-year-old architect from Stuttgart named Thomas, had told us at the pre-climb briefing that he had a moderate fear of heights and wasn’t sure he could finish.
He made it to the top of the Sky Ladder. At the summit, he stood with his back against the rock for about a minute and didn’t say anything. Then he laughed and said, in German, something our guide translated as: “I’ve never done anything that stupid or that good at the same time.”
That’s a fair description of the experience. Three to four hours on iron rungs and fixed cables, the cliff dropping 1,000 meters below you, at altitude where the air is slightly thinner and the effort slightly harder than expected. The safety system — continuous clipping to a fixed cable throughout — is reliable. The guides are attentive; we’ve seen them backtrack to help a struggling participant without hesitation. But don’t mistake “safe” for “easy.” The mountain asks something genuine of you.
For visitors who want the exposure without the full route commitment, the Cliff Jump Experience (CNY 168) and the Cloud Swing (CNY 280) are worthwhile alternatives. Both include park entry and give you a real taste of the altitude and the view.

5. The Main Sightseeing Attractions
The Cable Car (七星山索道)

The Seven Star Cable Car runs 2,003 meters with a 42.79° slope and a 708-meter vertical rise. The ride takes roughly 6–8 minutes. The ascent cuts through cliff faces and gives you a visceral sense of the mountain’s scale. Cable car operations can be suspended in strong wind or heavy fog — this happens more frequently here than at Tianmen Mountain.
The 1520 Sky Eye Glass Platform (1520天空之眼)

A circular platform extending 16 meters over the cliff at 1,520 meters altitude. The glass-bottom center section is about 8 meters in diameter. The walkway leading to it is 200 meters long and 1.9 meters wide. The name is deliberate: “1520” in Chinese sounds like “一生爱你” — “I love you forever.” On May 20th and Valentine’s Day, couples come here specifically for that reason.
The platform is included in the standard ticket price.
The Picking Star Platform (摘星台) — 1,528.6 m

The highest point in both the scenic area and all of Zhangjiajie city. On a clear day you can see Tianmen Mountain across the valley. On a cloudy day you’re standing in mist. Both are worth experiencing; only one makes for photographs.
The Tethering Post Peak (系马桩) — 1,314 m

A slender standalone pillar of rock at precisely 1,314 meters. In Chinese, “1314” sounds like “一生一世” — “forever and always.” Another romantic landmark that’s also just a genuinely well-formed rock spire.
The Zhuxu Plank Road (颛顼栈道)

The main walking circuit along the cliff edge, passing the Echo Wall (回音壁) and the Rhinoceros Horn (犀牛角). This is the section that most resembles classic Zhangjiajie scenery. Allow 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace.
The High Mountain Toboggan (管轨滑道)

A 1,000-meter outdoor track, 3-minute descent, CNY 80 one-way. Many visitors skip it. We think they’re wrong to. It’s quick, fun, and gives you angles on the mountain you won’t see from the plank roads.

7. Best Time to Visit

Autumn (September–November) is the season we recommend most consistently to foreign visitors. The air is clear, cloud sea conditions are at their most reliable, and temperatures on the plateau are cool and comfortable — bring a jacket, even in October. Avoid the first week of October (Golden Week) if possible.
Spring (March–May) brings green scenery and more frequent mist, which suits certain photographers but reduces visibility for others.
Summer (June–August) is the busiest period and our least recommended. Humidity, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and peak crowds reduce the experience significantly.
Winter (December–February) is quiet, sometimes strikingly beautiful in snow, and the only season Qixing Mountain offers something its competitors don’t: skiing. Average plateau temperatures drop well below freezing. Come prepared and early — daylight is short.
Whatever season: check the morning weather forecast before you leave your hotel. If visibility is poor, consider rescheduling. No other advice in this guide matters more.
8. Who Should Visit Qixing Mountain
A strong choice if:
- You’re specifically interested in via ferrata or high-altitude adventure activities
- You’ve already done Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain and want something different
- You’re visiting in autumn and want cloud sea views with fewer crowds
- You have an extra day in Zhangjiajie beyond the standard itinerary
- You’re a couple who appreciates the “romantic altitude numbers” — 1,314 m and 1,520 m
Lower priority if:
- You only have 2–3 days in Zhangjiajie and haven’t seen Wulingyuan yet
- Your main goal is classic Zhangjiajie scenery — sandstone pillars, Avatar landscapes — that’s Wulingyuan, not here
- Weather looks uncertain and you can’t reschedule
- You have mobility limitations — the plank road circuit involves uneven terrain and steps
- You prefer strong English-language visitor support throughout

Opening Hours
Hours | Last Entry | |
|---|---|---|
Scenic Area (general) | 08:30–18:00 | 16:00 |
Via Ferrata | 08:30–18:00 | 13:00 |
The 13:00 Via Ferrata cutoff catches people out. If you’re planning to do a via ferrata route, arrive at the cable car lower station by 10:00 at the latest to allow buffer time for the ride up and pre-activity briefing.
Inside the Scenic Area
A shuttle bus runs the main circuit: Cable Car Summit → Bagonting (八角亭) → Picking Star Platform (摘星台) → 1520 Sky Eye. Included in the ticket price. The walking circuit takes 3–4 hours; with the shuttle, you can cover the highlights in 2–3.
Two restaurants operate on the plateau: the Bagonting Cloud Restaurant and a ski resort canteen. Budget CNY 80–100 per person. Snack kiosks near the main viewpoints cover drinks and light food. Eating before you go up or bringing your own saves both money and time.
10. Practical Tips
Arrive at opening. The cable car starts at 08:30. The cloud sea, when it happens, is at its best before 09:30. By mid-morning it has usually lifted.
Dress for the altitude. The plateau sits at 1,400–1,528 meters. Year-round average temperature is around 9°C. Even in July, bring a light jacket. In October and below, a warm mid-layer is essential.
Wear proper shoes. Non-slip footwear is required on the glass walkway sections. Staff can require you to purchase CNY 5 shoe covers if your soles are deemed unsuitable. Save the fuss — wear trainers or hiking shoes.
Set up mobile payment before arrival. Alipay or WeChat Pay is needed for on-site purchases beyond your entry ticket. International cards are not accepted at individual activity counters.
Download offline maps. Signal is generally available on the plateau but drops out on some plank road sections.
Bring your passport. Required for entry.
Book the Via Ferrata at least one week ahead during peak season. Daily slots are limited. The 13:00 last-entry cutoff means morning arrival is not optional — it’s mandatory.
11. Combining Qixing Mountain with Zhangjiajie
Qixing Mountain works best as part of a 4–5 day Zhangjiajie itinerary, not as a standalone visit.
Our standard recommendation for foreign visitors:
- Day 1–2: Wulingyuan National Forest Park (Avatar Mountains, Bailong Elevator, Yuanjiajie)
- Day 3: Tianmen Mountain
- Day 4: Qixing Mountain sightseeing circuit, or Via Ferrata if booked ahead
- Day 5 (optional): Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge
For adventure-focused travelers, swap Day 3 and 4 so you do Qixing Mountain fresh.

12. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Qixing Mountain better than Tianmen Mountain?
They’re different experiences. Tianmen Mountain has a more dramatic cable car approach, the famous natural arch, and much stronger international recognition. Qixing Mountain has better adventure activities and more reliable cloud sea conditions. If you can do both, do both. For pure sightseeing on a limited schedule, Tianmen Mountain is the stronger choice. For adventure, it’s not close — Qixing Mountain wins.
Can I visit without speaking Chinese?
For the standard sightseeing circuit, yes — the shuttle bus and cable car are easy to navigate with pointing and QR codes. For the Via Ferrata, we strongly recommend booking through us.
How hard is the Big Rock Wall Via Ferrata physically?
Harder than most people expect. Three to four hours of sustained effort on vertical iron rungs at altitude. You will be tired at the end. Don’t schedule anything physically demanding for the same afternoon. Guests who’ve done Alpine via ferratas in Europe tell us the exposure here is comparable to mid-grade routes in the Dolomites, with the additional challenge of higher altitude.
Is the toboggan worth it?
Yes. CNY 80 for a 3-minute outdoor slide that gives you views the walking paths don’t. Most visitors skip it. We recommend against skipping it.
What if the weather is bad on my day?
Cable car operations may be suspended in strong wind or heavy fog. The Via Ferrata can be closed in rain or wind. There is generally no refund once you’re on the mountain. Check conditions before leaving your hotel and call 0744-8556789 if uncertain. This is not a minor concern — weather closures happen regularly here.
13. A Note from Our Team

We’ve been watching Qixing Mountain develop from a blank on the map into something real, and our feelings about it are genuinely mixed — which probably means we’re being honest.
The Via Ferrata is the best reason to come. If you do Route 1 on a clear day and make it to the top of the Sky Ladder, you will remember it. The cloud sea at dawn from the 1520 platform is the second-best reason. On the right autumn morning, it’s one of the finest views in Hunan Province.
But we’ve also redirected clients on days the cable car couldn’t run. We’ve seen corners cut during the fast-paced build-out. And we’ve wished, more than once, that the English-language support here matched the ambition of the adventure products.
Qixing Mountain rewards preparation and the right expectations. It doesn’t reward just turning up and hoping for the best. Come with a plan, check the forecast, book the Via Ferrata in advance if that’s your goal, and come in autumn if you can.
When everything aligns, it earns its place on your Zhangjiajie itinerary.
