Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base: Complete Visitor Guide
We have been taking clients to Bifengxia since 2006. Most come expecting a panda base and leave having spent a full day in a gorge with waterfalls, cliff coffins, and mountain air that bears no resemblance to Chengdu. The panda base is one section of a full-day national 5A scenic area that combines a working panda research centre, two gorge hiking trails, waterfalls, and a wildlife zoo. This guide covers all of it: tickets, routes, getting there, and how to decide whether it belongs in your Sichuan itinerary.

1. Is Bifengxia the Right Panda Base for Your Trip?
Bifengxia is not the right choice for every visitor. It requires 2–2.5 hours of travel each way from Chengdu — for a short city-based trip, we usually point people toward the Chengdu city base or Dujiangyan instead. But for the right itinerary, Bifengxia offers something none of the other bases can: pandas inside a working mountain gorge, with proper hiking trails, dense forest, and almost no crowds.
How Does Bifengxia Compare?
Bifengxia | Wolong Shenshuping | Dujiangyan Base | Chengdu City Base | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Distance from Chengdu | ~150km / 2–2.5 hrs | ~130km / 2–2.5 hrs | ~55km / 1–1.5 hrs | 10km / 30 min |
Crowd level | Low | Very low | Low–moderate | High |
Pandas on site | 80+ | 70+ | ~30 (closed 2026) | 200+ |
Natural setting | Gorge, forest, waterfalls | High-altitude mountain valley | Mountain foothills | Manicured park |
Gorge hiking | Yes — 2.5km or 7.5km | Mountain boardwalks | No | No |
Full-day combination | Pandas + gorge + waterfalls | Pandas + mountain wilderness | Pandas only | Pandas + museum |
Volunteer program | Yes | Yes | Closed (2026) | No |
Best for | Multi-day Sichuan routes, Xiang Xiang | Wild-setting panda experience | Day trips from Chengdu | First visits, limited time |
Bifengxia works best as part of a multi-destination Sichuan route. Natural pairings: Chengdu → Ya’an overnight → Leshan Giant Buddha → Emei Shan. Or Chengdu → Bifengxia → Wolong → Hailuogou Glacier. We build it into 7-day and 10-day Sichuan itineraries regularly.

2. What Is Bifengxia — and Is It Just a Panda Base?

Bifengxia is a national 5A scenic area covering approximately 20 square kilometres in the hills 19km north of Ya’an city centre. Ya’an is where the giant panda was first documented by Western science — French naturalist Armand David identified the species here in 1869, and the city has been at the centre of panda conservation ever since. Bifengxia has three distinct sections: the panda base, the gorge scenic area, and the wildlife zoo. All three sit within the same ticketed boundary, but they are separate enough that most visitors spend a full day moving between them.
The panda base occupies 1,074 mu (roughly 72 hectares) of the gorge. It is run by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) — a different organisation from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which is managed by the Chengdu city government. The two systems have separate management, different research mandates, and independent panda populations.

The gorge itself has two hiking trails: the left gorge (7.5km, 3–4 hours) and the right gorge (2.5km, 1.5–2 hours). Both run through dense forest with waterfalls and finish at the Qingyun Ladder elevator, which returns visitors to the Visitor Centre. Both trails are included in the CNY 100 ticket.
What a realistic full day looks like: The panda base takes 1.5–2 hours. The right gorge adds another 1.5–2 hours. Together they fill a comfortable full day. The left gorge and wildlife zoo each need extra time — most clients on a first visit choose one gorge and leave the zoo for another day. The wildlife zoo is the only eco-style wildlife park in Sichuan, with a drive-through predator zone covering 10,000 mu; it requires a separate ticket.
3. What Will You See Inside the Panda Base?
🔇 Noise affects what you see.
Pandas retreat indoors when they hear loud sounds. Despite signs asking for quiet everywhere, shouting and whistling happen constantly — and the pandas at White Bear Ground respond by disappearing. Wangjia's and Dabitu's yards are the most affected. The further uphill you go, the less this matters. Go early, move toward Leopard Mountain if the lower zones are noisy, and wait quietly. Patience produces better sightings than noise ever does.

The shuttle bus drops you at the panda base entrance. The base runs uphill — most visitors walk down through the zones in sequence and take the in-base sightseeing bus back up.
White Bear Ground (白熊坪)

The first zone after the entrance. Eight enclosures hold mainly adult pandas. Keepers enrich the environment with jute bags, climbing frames, and tubs to encourage natural behaviour. The enclosures are deep — when pandas move to the far end, even a good zoom struggles. We always advise clients to bring a 400–600mm telephoto for this zone; a phone works if a panda happens to be near the front, but don’t count on it.
Panda Kindergarten (熊猫幼儿园)

A nursery room plus outdoor enclosures for young pandas. The kindergarten phase is the only time in a giant panda’s life when several will share space comfortably, which makes it the most visually active zone in the base — cubs tumble, use swings and tyres, and stay close to the viewing platforms. Phone photography works well. The best window for cubs is July to October; outside this window the enclosures may be empty or hold only one or two animals.
Leopard Mountain / Overseas Panda Paradise (豹子山 / 海归熊猫乐园)

The largest section of the base, furthest from the entrance and consistently the best viewing area. Seven enclosures hold pandas born overseas and repatriated to China, including Xiang Xiang (香香) — born at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo in 2017, she became a national phenomenon in Japan before returning to Bifengxia in February 2023. Her mother Shin Shin is also here; this is the only place in the world where both can be seen. Xiang Xiang’s viewing is subject to her health and activity on any given day. Her enclosure is in the Leopard Mountain Villa section, uphill from the main bus stop — if the bus is quiet, ask the driver to let you off further up the hill. Enclosures here are close to the platforms and phone photography works well.
Panda Breeding Station (熊猫繁殖场)
The research and breeding section at the far end of the base. Visitor access varies by season — during active breeding periods some areas are closed. If you arrive here and find little to see, head back to Leopard Mountain.
Afternoon feeding windows are approximately 14:00 and 16:00, varying slightly by enclosure. These are the most reliable times for active viewing if you missed the morning.
4. How Much Does It Cost — and What Does the Ticket Cover?
The panda base cannot be purchased separately. The only way in is the Bifengxia scenic area combined ticket, which covers considerably more than just the pandas.
Visitor | Price |
|---|---|
Adult | CNY 100 |
Child | CNY 50 |
Senior 60–64 (public holiday) | CNY 50 |
Senior 60–64 (non-holiday) | CNY 30 |
Senior 65+ (public holiday) | CNY 30 |
Included: Gorge scenic area, panda base, shuttle bus from Visitor Centre to panda base, enclosed Qingyun Ladder elevator.
Not included: In-base sightseeing bus (CNY 20/person), panda observation elevator (price posted on-site), Sky Bridge (CNY 20/person), wildlife zoo (entirely separate ticket).
Tickets are available at the gate. Bring your passport — it is required for purchase. Checking Trip.com before arrival sometimes surfaces small discounts.
5. How to Get to Bifengxia from Chengdu
The distance from Chengdu is real — plan for it rather than underestimate it. There are three ways to make the journey work, and the right one depends on whether you are going independently or with a private car.
By private car (recommended)
Door-to-door from central Chengdu in approximately 2–2.5 hours via the Chengdu–Ya’an Expressway. This gives you full control over timing — arrive at 09:00, leave when you have finished, no return constraint. We arrange private transfers for all our Bifengxia clients; see our charter car service for details.
By high-speed train + shared minibus

- Chengdu to Ya’an Station: approximately 1 hour 20 minutes; trains run throughout the day; from CNY 54
- Ya’an Station to Bifengxia Visitor Centre: take the small yellow minibus from outside the station — a fixed-route vehicle that runs when it has enough passengers; approximately 40 minutes. The last minibus back from Bifengxia departs around 15:00. If you miss it, you will need a private car for the return.
- Visitor Centre to panda base: free shuttle bus included in ticket; approximately 10 minutes; board from the right side of the building
Google Maps and Apple Maps do not reliably locate the Visitor Centre. Didi works well — search 碧峰峡游客中心 in Chinese. If you are already in Ya’an, Didi is also more reliable than flagging a cab to the scenic area.
The 15:00 return constraint is the main complication with this route. An overnight stay in Ya’an removes it entirely.
Chengdu <–> Bifengxia direct coach

A direct coach runs from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station (新南门汽运站) daily: departure 07:30, return 17:30, one-way CNY 55. No intermediate transfer, no 15:00 constraint on the return. The one-way travel time is approximately 2.5 hours. The simplest option for an independent weekend day trip.
Please be aware that during the tourist off-season, there is a high probability that scheduled bus trips may be canceled or replaced by smaller vehicles. It is also possible that departure times may be delayed. This same situation applies to the small yellow shuttle buses mentioned above. In our experience, we have encountered these issues multiple times.
At the Visitor Centre
Turn right for the scenic area and panda base. The left side leads to Bifengxia Wildlife Zoo — a separate facility. Many first-time visitors go left by mistake. Free luggage storage is available until approximately 18:00.
Where to stay in Ya’an
For anyone traveling independently or wanting a full day that includes the gorge, an overnight in Ya’an is the practical choice. The Holiday Inn Express Ya’an is a reliable mid-range option, about 30 minutes by Didi to the Visitor Centre. Small guesthouses directly outside the panda base entrance are also available — they eliminate transit time entirely and suit travelers who want to be on-site first thing.
6. When Is the Best Time to Visit Bifengxia?
For anyone traveling independently or wanting a full day that includes the gorge, an overnight in Ya’an is the practical choice. The Holiday Inn Express Ya’an is a reliable mid-range option, about 30 minutes by Didi to the Visitor Centre. Small guesthouses directly outside the panda base entrance are also available — they eliminate transit time entirely and suit travelers who want to be on-site first thing.
Ya’an climate — average temperature & monthly rainfall
Source: China Meteorological Administration historical normals (雅安气象站)
Ya’an earns its nickname — the Rain City — with over 1,800mm of annual rainfall. No season is reliably dry; we bring rain jackets for every client regardless of the forecast. Within that context, the best combination of panda activity, weather, and low crowds falls in September and October. Cubs are visible July through October if that is a priority, while the cooler months from November through February tend to produce the most active adult pandas.
Season | Pandas | Weather | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
March–May | Active adults; mild conditions | Mild, some rain | Low |
June–August | Cubs from July; adults less active in heat | Hot, humid, afternoon rain | Moderate |
September–October | High activity across all zones | Excellent | Low |
November–February | Adults often livelier in cool temperatures | Cool, misty | Very low |
| Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|
Within any day, arrive at 09:00 when the base opens. The morning window before 11:30 is consistently the most active. The 11:30–13:30 closure is firm every day of the year.
7. How Does the Panda Volunteer Program Work?

Please note that the videos or photos you see on the internet showing people feeding or having close contact with pandas are from a long time ago. Currently, these activities are no longer permitted. You are unable to have close contact with pandas at any panda base.
The volunteer programme is a half-day of actual keeper work — cleaning enclosures, preparing bamboo, making panda cakes, watching a care documentary — alongside the base’s own staff, not as part of a tourist group. Participants must be aged 12–65 and submit a health certificate in advance. You will be genuinely close to adult pandas throughout the day.

The one thing to know upfront: the Bifengxia programme does not include observing keepers feed pandas at close range. If that is your main reason for doing a volunteer programme, Wolong is the better choice. But if you want to combine the keeper experience with a day in the gorge — something no other base currently offers — Bifengxia is the only option. The Dujiangyan Panda Base had the most established international volunteer programme, but it is closed for renovation in 2026 with no confirmed reopening date.
Contact us for current pricing and to handle the booking. Advance arrangements are essential; we have been coordinating this since 2006.

8. What to Do After the Pandas: Gorge Routes

Once you have finished the panda zones, the gorge trails are what turn the visit into a full day. Both run mostly downhill from the panda base end and finish at the Qingyun Ladder elevator, which carries you back up to the Visitor Centre in about one minute.

One rule applies to both routes: always enter from the panda base end, never from the Visitor Centre side. Walking down from the Visitor Centre into the left gorge means a punishing uphill return. The correct sequence every time is Visitor Centre → shuttle bus → panda base → gorge → elevator.
Right Gorge — Highlights Route (2.5km, 1.5–2 hours)
From the panda base, return to Fushan Bridge (福善桥) and follow signs through Yajie Garden, Guanlong Terrace, Qinglong Pool Waterfall (青龙潭瀑布), Cuiping Waterfall, and Yuanyang Waterfall (鸳鸯瀑布) to the elevator. Mostly downhill throughout.
Best for: Families, first-time visitors, anyone who wants a complete but manageable day. The waterfall sections are the highlight — this is the route we recommend for most clients.
Left Gorge — Full Route (7.5km, 3–4 hours)

From the panda base, follow signs to Xiaoxitian (小西天): Tianweng Bridge (田翁桥) → Taojiatan → Nüwa Pool (女娲池) → Tianlongling (天龙凌云) → Red Lantern → cliff coffins (悬棺) → Buzhi Butian Peak (十指补天峰) → Thousand Layer Cliff Waterfall (千层岩瀑布) → elevator.
Best for: Active travellers or anyone on a second day. The full gorge is significantly more varied and almost deserted on weekdays.
Sky Bridge (悬空透视桥)

From the Overseas Panda Paradise exit, walk 500m to the Sky Bridge — steel mesh grid, not glass, CNY 20 extra.
Best for: Visitors skipping the gorge and connecting directly to the wildlife zoo.
Getting Back Up: The Two Elevators
Both gorge routes finish at the bottom of the gorge, where two elevators carry visitors back up to the Visitor Centre level — and they are not the same thing.

The Qingyun Ladder is INCLUDED in the CNY 100 ticket. It is an enclosed, functional elevator built into the cliff face — no external views, one minute from the gorge floor to the top. Unglamorous, but it works, and it saves a long uphill climb after several hours of hiking. This is what most visitors use.

The Panda Observation Elevator is a separate, scenic structure with glass panels that give views over the gorge and the surrounding forest. It costs extra — the price is posted at the entrance and varies. Worth it if the weather is clear and you want one more viewpoint before leaving; easy to skip if you are tired or the visibility is low.
Both elevators are at the same end of the gorge. You will see the signs for both when you reach the base of the cliff.
9. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bifengxia Panda Base worth visiting?
Yes, for travellers who can give it a full day and want more than panda viewing. The gorge, the waterfalls, and the 95% forest coverage add genuine value that no city base can offer. The panda base alone takes 1.5–2 hours; the full scenic area is what makes the day complete. If your Sichuan trip is based in Chengdu with fewer than three days, the city base or Dujiangyan is more practical.
How many pandas will I see?
The base houses over 80 giant pandas across four zones. In our experience bringing clients here since 2006, every group has seen pandas — the variable is how active they are. Morning visits before 11:30 consistently produce the best results.
Can I buy just a panda base ticket?
No. The panda base is not sold separately. The Bifengxia scenic area combined ticket (CNY 100 adult) is the only admission option; it covers the gorge, panda base, shuttle bus, and enclosed elevator.
How long does a full visit take?
The panda base takes 1.5–2 hours. Add 1.5–2 hours for the right gorge (2.5km), or 3–4 hours for the left (7.5km). A comfortable full day on the right gorge: arrive at the panda base by 09:30, finish by 11:30, restart at 13:30, complete the gorge and elevator return by around 15:30.
What happens if it rains?
Plan for rain regardless of the forecast — Ya’an averages over 1,800mm annually. Light rain is fine and often makes the gorge more atmospheric. In heavy rain, pandas retreat to indoor shelters and the gorge trails become genuinely slippery. If it is raining hard when you arrive, go to the Kindergarten and Leopard Mountain zones first — their covered viewing areas hold up better. Skip the gorge hike in heavy rain. Anti-slip trail shoes matter here; the paths stay damp even after dry spells.
Which gorge route should I choose?
The right gorge (2.5km, 1.5–2 hours, mostly downhill) suits families and most first-time visitors — it covers the best waterfall scenery in a manageable time. The left gorge (7.5km, 3–4 hours) is for active travellers who want a proper mountain day. Both routes start from the panda base end; never enter from the Visitor Centre side or you face a steep uphill return.
Is the volunteer program available?
Yes, daily, for participants aged 12–65. Contact us for current pricing and booking — health certificates must be arranged in advance. Note that the Bifengxia programme does not include close-range keeper feeding observation; for that, Wolong is the better option.
Can I visit without a private car?
Yes. High-speed train to Ya’an (1 hr 20 min, from CNY 54), then the small yellow minibus to the Visitor Centre (approximately 40 minutes). The main constraint is the 15:00 last minibus back — plan around it or stay overnight. There is also a daily direct coach from Xinnanmen Bus Station (07:30, CNY 55 one-way).
Is Bifengxia suitable for elderly visitors or families with young children?
The panda base is manageable for most — paved paths, the sightseeing bus eliminates uphill sections, and zones are not far apart. There are slopes and steps throughout, and the terrain is a working mountain gorge rather than a flat park. Visitors with significant mobility limitations will find it harder than the Chengdu city base. The gorge trails involve substantial stairs and are not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Families with young children typically manage the panda base well and do the right gorge; elderly visitors in reasonable health do fine with the bus and can skip the gorge hike.
What is the difference between Bifengxia and the Chengdu Panda Base?
Different organisations, different settings, fundamentally different experience. The Chengdu Research Base is managed by the Chengdu city government: 10km from the centre, 200+ pandas, manicured park, high crowds. Bifengxia is run by CCRCGP, the national body: 150km from Chengdu, 80+ pandas in a mountain gorge with 95% forest coverage, a fraction of the visitors. Chengdu is right for first-timers with limited time; Bifengxia is right for those who want nature and pandas together.
