How To Get To Chengdu Panda Base

How to Get to Chengdu Panda Base (All in One Guide)

There are four ways to get to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: the official Scenic Area Direct Bus (景区直通车, CNY 8, five lines from Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley, Chengdu East, and Wuhou Shrine), the metro feeder buses 408 and 409 (CNY 2), the Tianfu Airport Express (CNY 15), and regular taxis (CNY 27–50, the only option that drops you directly at the South Gate entrance). We cover each in full below, including how to tell the official Chengdu Transit Group buses apart from the two private operators — HiPanda and Panda Bus (熊猫巴士) — that work the same area and cause genuine confusion.

2. Scenic Area Direct Bus

The Scenic Area Direct Bus (景区直通车) is a dedicated tourist bus service connecting city-centre landmarks directly to the panda base gates. All five lines are operated by Qu Shua Bus (趣耍巴士) on behalf of Chengdu Transit Group (成都公交集团). This is the official service — not to be confused with HiPanda or Panda Bus, which use similar names and operate nearby. See Section 3 for how to tell them apart.

Fare: CNY 8 on all five lines. QR code payment only (WeChat Pay or Alipay). Transit cards, monthly passes, student cards, and seniors’ passes are not accepted on any of the five lines. Tickets can be booked via the Chengdu Transit Group WeChat mini-programme (search “成都公交”) or by scanning the QR code at the boarding point on the day. Customer service hotline: 4000-82-1717.

Lines 1, 2, and 3 run every day. Lines 4 and 5 run on weekends and statutory public holidays only.

The west side goes to the South Gate (Line 2). Look for the Chengdu Transit Group standing signboard and a staff member in a black uniform. Do not board vehicles that approach you — the official service does not solicit passengers.

Return: West Gate bus stop, 100 metres downhill to the right after exiting. Journey time: 30–40 minutes.

Line 5: Wuhouci → South Gate (Weekends & Holidays Only)

The only direct bus that links three of Chengdu’s most-visited attractions in a single journey: Wuhou Shrine / Jinli (武侯祠·锦里), Wide and Narrow Alley (宽窄巷子), and the Panda Base. Built for a morning-at-Wuhou, afternoon-at-pandas itinerary.

3. Know the Difference: Official vs HiPanda vs Panda Bus

The Scenic Area Direct Bus is not the only service calling itself “景区直通车.” Two private operators use similar names and work the same boarding areas. Vehicle colours overlap across all three operators — colour alone is not a reliable way to identify the official service. Use the operator name, logo, and fare.

Official: Chengdu Transit Group / Qu Shua Bus (成都公交集团 / 趣耍巴士)

How To Get To Chengdu Panda Base (All In One Guide)

Look for “成都公交集团” or “趣耍巴士” markings on the vehicle and at the boarding point. At Chunxi Road, the boarding zone has a standing signboard and a staff member in a black uniform. Fare: CNY 8 (direct lines) or CNY 2 (metro feeder buses). Fixed timetables. Departs on time. No on-board promotion.

HiPanda (Yellow Vehicles and Signage — CNY 9)

HiPanda vehicles carry prominent HiPanda branding and logo in yellow. The ticketing stand at Chunxi Road is at Metro Line 2 Exit C, close to the official stop. The company also calls itself “成都景区直通车” — nearly identical to the official product name. Fare to the panda base: CNY 9.

Most HiPanda reviews are positive. The issues that come up in negative reviews:

Timing is unpredictable. Buses sometimes wait for a full load before departing. On HiPanda’s own Panda Base → Sanxingdui combo ticket, one visitor reported the bus stopped at the West Gate for 30 minutes to collect more passengers — not disclosed at booking. A 50-minute journey took 1.5 hours. Note that Chengdu Transit Group runs a separate official connection bus on the same route (see Section 7) which does not have this issue.

Refunds are effectively impossible. Multiple visitors report that the mini-programme does not allow cancellation after rebooking. Customer service is difficult to reach by phone and does not respond via WeChat groups or Xiaohongshu. When one visitor threatened to file a 12315 consumer complaint and publish publicly, the customer service agent stopped responding entirely.

Multi-leg combo tickets carry hidden waits. The Panda Base → Sanxingdui → Kuanzhai Alley combo has limited return slots; rebooking is advertised but not functional in practice.

For the main Chengdu Research Base, the official Chengdu Transit Group service is the better choice. HiPanda’s main use case is the Panda Valley route in Dujiangyan, where it is the only direct bus from central Chengdu.

Panda Bus / 熊猫巴士 (Orange Livery — CNY 10, Outside South Gate)

Panda Bus (熊猫巴士) coaches with orange livery and their own logo park outside the South Gate and approach departing visitors directly — often targeting people who are tired, disoriented, or struggling to find the official bus stop after a long day. Fare: CNY 10, paid with a paper ticket.

Here is what one visitor experienced: the ticket showed a 16:00 departure. She arrived at the boarding point at 15:38 and was told the previous bus had just left. Wait for the next one — 30 minutes. The bus finally departed at 16:20, 40 minutes after the stated time. On board, an attendant spent the journey using a loudspeaker to promote Sichuan opera tickets, restaurants, and tourist attractions — no option to tune it out on a bus that already smelled bad after a full day in the heat. Many other travelers have also reported experiences similar to hers.

Compared to the CNY 2 official metro feeder bus or a CNY 27–50 regular taxi, Panda Bus costs more, takes longer, and is an actively unpleasant experience. There is no scenario where it is the right choice. Exit the park, turn right, and walk 200 metres to the official Bus 408 stop.

4. Metro Feeder Bus (CNY 2)

Two dedicated feeder buses connect Metro Line 3 directly to the panda base gates. These are standard city buses — not minibuses — and accept transit cards, unlike the Scenic Area Direct Bus lines above. Both run year-round on seasonal timetables.

Bus 408: Panda Avenue Station Exit D → South Gate

  1. Take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station (熊猫大道站).
  2. Exit from Gate D. The bus stop is 10 metres from the exit.
  3. Board Bus 408 to the South Gate.

Bus 409: Military Hospital Station Exit B → West Gate

The West Gate is quieter in the mornings and better for photography.

  1. Take Metro Line 3 to Military District General Hospital Station (军区总医院站).
  2. Exit Gate B. Follow signs towards Yulei Road junction (玉垒路口) and walk 200 metres to the bus transfer stop (军区总医院巴士换乘站).

Total: 80 minutes, CNY 8–10.

6. By Taxi or DiDi

Taxi and DiDi are both options, but there is a critical difference between the two.

Regular taxis drop you directly at the South Gate entrance. The driver pulls up to the kerb right outside the gate. Fare from central Chengdu: CNY 27–50 depending on your starting point and traffic. Journey time: 30–40 minutes.

DiDi (ride-hailing) cannot reach the gate. DiDi vehicles are restricted to designated pick-up and drop-off points that are a long walk from both the South Gate and West Gate entrances. Multiple visitors report the walk from the DiDi drop-off to the South Gate is unexpectedly far — particularly difficult on the return leg when you are tired after a full day.

Our recommendation: if you are taking a car, take a regular taxi. The fare is similar and it drops you at the door.

For the West Gate, the DiDi drop-off point is somewhat closer than at the South Gate, but still not at the entrance itself.

Return by taxi: Taxis are available at both gates on exit. On busy days, expect a short queue. Bus 408 or 409 (CNY 2) back to the metro is faster if queues are long.

7. Bonus: Panda Base → Sanxingdui Museum (Same Day)

A direct connection bus runs from the West Gate to Sanxingdui Museum, operated by Chengdu Transit Group / Qu Shua Bus (成都公交集团 / 趣耍巴士) — the same official operator as the Scenic Area Direct Bus lines above.

9. Practical Tips

Arrive early. Pandas are most active from 7:30–10:30 during feeding. After 11:00, most retreat indoors or sleep. Whatever route you take, take the earliest available option.

If taking a car, use a regular taxi, not DiDi. Taxis drop you at the South Gate entrance. DiDi pick-up and drop-off points require a long walk to either gate.

Foreign bank cards now work on the Chengdu metro. Since July 2025, Visa, Mastercard, and Amex contactless payments work directly at metro turnstiles — no Alipay or WeChat Pay required for the metro portion of your journey.

Return buses fill up. If leaving after 15:00 on a busy day, board the return bus immediately on exiting the park.

10. FAQ: How to Get To Chengdu Panda Base

What is the cheapest way to get to Chengdu panda base?

Metro Feeder Bus 408 (CNY 2) is the cheapest option — take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, exit Gate D, and board Bus 408 directly to the South Gate. Add CNY 4–6 for the metro itself from central Chengdu.

What is the Scenic Area Direct Bus (景区直通车)?

The Scenic Area Direct Bus is an official tourist bus service run by Chengdu Transit Group (成都公交集团) / Qu Shua Bus (趣耍巴士). Five lines connect city-centre landmarks — Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley, Chengdu East, Wuhou Shrine — directly to the panda base gates. Fare is CNY 8 per trip on all lines. It is not the same as HiPanda or Panda Bus, which use similar names but are privately operated.

How do I tell the official buses apart from HiPanda and Panda Bus?

Do not rely on colour — the official fleet uses multiple liveries. Look for the operator name on the vehicle: “成都公交集团” or “趣耍巴士” means official. HiPanda vehicles carry prominent HiPanda branding and logo in yellow (CNY 9). Panda Bus (熊猫巴士) uses orange livery with its own logo and operates outside the South Gate (CNY 10, paper ticket).

Should I take a taxi or DiDi to the panda base?

Take a regular taxi (出租车). Taxis drop you directly at the South Gate entrance. DiDi vehicles cannot reach either gate and drop passengers at designated points requiring a long walk. The fare difference is small; the convenience difference is significant.

Can I use a public transit card on the Scenic Area Direct Bus?

No. All five Scenic Area Direct Bus lines require QR code payment (WeChat Pay or Alipay). Transit cards, seniors’ passes, and student cards are not accepted. Metro Feeder Buses 408 and 409 do accept transit cards.

Do I need to book the return bus in advance?

No. All official return services operate on a show-up basis. On busy days, board as soon as you exit the park.

How do I book Scenic Area Direct Bus tickets?

Via the Chengdu Transit Group WeChat mini-programme: search “成都公交”. You can also scan the QR code at the boarding point on the day. Customer service hotline: 4000-82-1717.
