1. Where Is Bifengxia Panda Base?

Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡熊猫基地) is in Ya’an, Sichuan — 154km southwest of Chengdu, 1 hour 45 minutes by car. Within Ya’an, the base is 19km north of the city center along the 108 National Highway into Bifengxia Gorge.
Bifengxia is a dead end — not a stop on the way to anywhere else. Budget for a full day, or overnight in Ya’an.
The base is one of four panda centers within reach of Chengdu. The Chengdu Research Base is 10km from downtown; Dujiangyan Panda Valley is 60km; Wolong Panda Reserve is 130km; Bifengxia is 154km. It is the furthest of the four, which is why transport planning matters more here than at any other base.
For visitors flying into Chengdu, the choice of airport affects your route. Shuangliu Airport (CTU) is 16km southwest of downtown Chengdu — close to the Chengdu–Ya’an axis, making it the more convenient starting point for Bifengxia. Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is 62km southeast of downtown, in the opposite direction from Ya’an. See our Chengdu airport guide for a full CTU vs TFU comparison.
→ See our Chengdu Panda Bases Guide for a full comparison before committing to Bifengxia.
2. Option 1: High-Speed Train + Taxi (Best for Independent Travelers)
High-speed train to Ya’an followed by taxi is the most reliable self-guided route. Door-to-gate time from central Chengdu: 2 hours.
Step 1 — Chengdu to Ya’an by train

Depart from Chengdu West Railway Station. Around 45 high-speed trains run daily to Ya’an, from 07:00 to 20:00. The fastest non-stop service takes 54 minutes; services with more stops take up to 1 hour 40 minutes. Second-class fare: from CNY 53.
All four Chengdu stations — Chengdu, Chengdu West, Chengdu East, and Chengdu South — serve this line. Chengdu West is the dedicated terminus for the Sichuan–Tibet Railway segment and has the most frequent departures. Book on the 12306 app or at the station window; foreign visitors board using their passport.
The 06:30 departure from Chengdu West arrives Ya’an at 07:49, giving enough time to reach the base before the 09:00 opening.
Step 2 — Ya’an to Bifengxia by taxi
Exit Ya’an Railway Station through the main doors. Walk 10 meters forward, turn right, and take the escalator down to B1 — this is the ride-hailing and taxi pickup zone. Show the driver: 碧峰峡熊猫基地门口 (Bifengxia Panda Base entrance). Agree on the fare before entering: CNY 50–60 to the base gate, metered fare does not exceed CNY 60. Do not accept fares quoted at the street-level exit — those prices are aimed at tourists who haven’t reached B1 yet.
The ride covers 19km and takes 25–30 minutes, following the 108 National Highway north through tea fields. You will pass signage for Shangli Ancient Town before the valley narrows into Bifengxia Gorge.
Total cost (one way): CNY 53 train + CNY 55 taxi = CNY 108 per person.
3. Option 2: High-Speed Train + Yellow Minibus (Budget Route)
The yellow tourist minibus (Panda Bus) connects Ya’an city to Bifengxia for CNY 6–10 per person. Total cost from Chengdu: CNY 71 per person one way.

Take the high-speed train to Ya’an (depart Chengdu West 06:30, arrive 07:49). Out of the station, go straight, turn right after 10 meters, and take the escalator down to B1. From the DiDi pickup zone there, set your destination to 雅安恒博医院北二路院区 — that’s the starting point for the minibus on North Second Road. CNY 10, 10 minutes.
At the stop you’ll see a cluster of orange-yellow minibuses. They all look the same from the outside, but each one runs a different route: Bifengxia (碧峰峡), Shangli Ancient Town (上里古镇), or Mengding Mountain (蒙顶山). Check the windscreen and ask the driver before getting on — we’ve seen people end up at the wrong valley because they didn’t.
The minibus leaves when it fills up — usually 10 to 15 people — and takes 40 minutes to Bifengxia Visitor Center. From there, a free shuttle runs to the panda base entrance, another 10 minutes.
Real timing: Depart Chengdu West 06:30 → Ya’an 07:49 → on DiDi by 07:52 → at minibus stop by 08:01 → Bifengxia Visitor Center by ~08:35.
If the bus hasn’t moved after 15 minutes, don’t wait — take a taxi from the visitor center directly to the base instead (CNY 30). On quiet weekday mornings, the bus can stall.
Return: The last minibus back from Bifengxia runs until 18:30. Drivers only head to the railway station when at least 10 passengers are going that way (CNY 8 per person). If that’s not happening, get to Ya’an city first by minibus (CNY 6), then take a taxi or DiDi to the station from there (CNY 15–20).
Total cost (one way): CNY 53 train + CNY 10 DiDi + CNY 8 minibus = CNY 71 per person.
4. Option 3: Long-Distance Bus to Ya’an, Then Taxi or Minibus
If Chengdu West station is not convenient, the long-distance bus to Ya’an is a slower alternative that works better if you’re already near the city center.
Buses depart from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station (新南门汽运站) and Chengdu Shiyangchang Bus Station (石羊场汽运站) to Ya’an every 10–60 minutes from 06:30 to 18:35. Journey time: 2–2.5 hours. Fare: CNY 47–70. Upon arriving at Ya’an Bus Station (雅安客运站 / 北二路), take a taxi to Bifengxia (CNY 50–60, 25 minutes), or board the yellow minibus (CNY 6–10, 40 minutes).
⚠️ A note on "direct Chengdu–Bifengxia buses": You'll see this listed on several travel websites — a direct bus from Xinnanmen straight to Bifengxia. That service ran briefly in 2025 and has since been CANCELLED. Not enough people used it. The information is still circulating online, but the bus no longer runs. Every route currently requires a transfer in Ya'an.
5. Option 4: Private Transfer (Best for Groups and Airport Arrivals)

A private car takes 1 hour 45 minutes from central Chengdu, exiting the expressway at Ya’an North and following the 108 National Highway to the scenic area. The driver waits and returns you to Chengdu — taxis back from Bifengxia become scarce after 16:30, making a waiting driver worth it.
Pricing varies depending on your pickup location in Chengdu, the season, and what else you want to include in the day. Contact us for a quote. Chengdu metered taxis do not accept Bifengxia as a destination.
From Shuangliu Airport (CTU): Private transfer to Bifengxia takes 2 hours. The cheaper alternative: Metro Line 10 to Chengdu West Railway Station (40 minutes, CNY 6), then the high-speed train to Ya’an — total 2 hours.
From Tianfu International Airport (TFU): TFU sits 62km southeast of downtown, in the opposite direction from Ya’an. A private transfer to Bifengxia takes 2.5–3 hours. For TFU arrivals, taking the airport metro to Chengdu West and then the train to Ya’an is faster and significantly cheaper. See our Chengdu airport guide for metro line details.

7. Getting Back to Chengdu
Start wrapping up by 16:00. The base begins clearing the far end of the park around 16:30 and visitors need to be out — it catches people off guard if they don’t know. Take the internal shuttle back to the visitor center, then catch the yellow minibus toward Ya’an (last service around 18:30).
From Ya’an, taxi or DiDi to the railway station. If you left the base around 16:30, a realistic chain looks like this: visitor center by 17:10 → minibus by 17:30 → Ya’an city by 18:00 → station by 18:40 → the 18:53 train → Chengdu West by 20:01.
The last train of the day from Ya’an to Chengdu West runs around 20:30. Confirm the exact time on 12306 before your trip; the schedule changes with each timetable revision.
8. Can You Do Bifengxia as a Day Trip from Chengdu?

Yes — but your transport choice determines how much of the day is actually usable.
On public transport, the 06:30 train from Chengdu West is the only service that gets you to the base gate by 09:00 opening. Miss it and you lose the morning feeding window — the best 2.5 hours of the day. Round-trip travel takes a minimum of 4 hours, and the 11:30–13:30 midday closure eats further into usable time.
With a private driver, the same day becomes genuinely comfortable. A 07:00 hotel pickup gets you to Bifengxia before 09:00. Your driver waits while you spend the morning with the pandas, handles the return timing, and has you back in Chengdu by early evening. No early metro, no taxi negotiation at Ya’an Station, no scramble for the last minibus back.
We have been running Bifengxia day trips for clients since 2006 — pandas in the morning, gorge scenery on the drive, back in time for dinner in Chengdu. Contact our team if you want us to arrange it.
For visitors planning to overnight in Ya’an: arrive the afternoon before and stay near the railway station — most budget and mid-range hotels are within a 5-minute walk, and you can be at Bifengxia’s gate 40 minutes after breakfast. Search hotels near Ya’an station →

9. FAQ – How to Get to Bifengxia Panda Base
Can you do Bifengxia as a day trip from Chengdu?
Yes. On public transport, the 06:30 train from Chengdu West is the only service that gets you to the base by 09:00 opening — the morning feeding window is the best 2.5 hours of the day. With a private driver, a 07:00 hotel pickup achieves the same without the early metro. The base closes 11:30–13:30 daily; morning arrival is essential.
Is there a direct bus from Chengdu to Bifengxia?
No — not currently. A direct service from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station to Bifengxia was trialled in 2025 but cancelled due to low passenger numbers. Many travel websites still list it; that information is outdated. All routes today require a transfer in Ya’an: take the high-speed train or long-distance bus to Ya’an, then a taxi (CNY 50–60) or yellow minibus (CNY 6–10) onward to Bifengxia.
How long does it take to get to Bifengxia from Chengdu?
Private transfer: 1 hour 45 minutes door-to-gate. High-speed train plus taxi: 2 hours total (54–80 minutes on the train, 25 minutes by taxi from Ya’an). Train plus yellow minibus: 2.5 hours, depending on how quickly the minibus fills. Long-distance bus plus taxi: 2.5–3 hours.
Which Chengdu train station do I use for Bifengxia?
Chengdu West Railway Station is the dedicated terminus for the Chengdu–Ya’an line and has the most frequent departures. All four Chengdu stations — West, East, South, and Chengdu — run services to Ya’an, so use whichever is closest to your hotel. The fastest trains from any station reach Ya’an in 54–80 minutes.
How do I get to Bifengxia from Chengdu airport?
From Shuangliu Airport (CTU): take Metro Line 10 to Chengdu West Railway Station (40 minutes, CNY 6), then the high-speed train to Ya’an. Or take a private transfer directly — 2 hours, price varies by pickup location and itinerary. From Tianfu Airport (TFU): take the airport metro to connect with Chengdu West station for the Ya’an train — allow 2–2.5 hours total. See our Chengdu airport guide for metro line details.
How much does it cost to get to Bifengxia from Chengdu?
Train (CNY 53) + taxi (CNY 55): CNY 108 per person one way. Train + yellow minibus: CNY 71 per person. Long-distance bus + taxi: CNY 100–130 per person. Private transfer: price depends on your Chengdu location, season, and itinerary — contact us for a quote.
What time should I arrive at Bifengxia Panda Base?
By 09:00. Pandas are most active 09:00–11:30 during morning feeding, then the base closes completely 11:30–13:30 — visitors inside must exit and no re-entry is permitted.
Should I visit Bifengxia or the Chengdu Panda Base?
The Chengdu Research Base is 10km from downtown and takes half a day. Bifengxia requires a full day or overnight trip and suits visitors who want fewer crowds and a mountain gorge setting. Our full Bifengxia Panda Base visitor guide covers what to expect inside. See our Chengdu panda bases comparison for a side-by-side breakdown.
What is the yellow minibus?
A local tourist shuttle running between Ya’an city and Bifengxia, Shangli Ancient Town, and Mengding Mountain. Pickup point: North Second Road (北二路) near Hengbo Hospital. Fare: CNY 6–10 one way. The bus departs when full — early morning slots fill fastest. All three routes use identical vehicles; always confirm your destination with the driver.
