How to Get to Wolong Panda Base: Transport Guide

Getting from Chengdu to Wolong panda base means driving 130km through Dujiangyan into Gengda Town — there is no train or metro. This guide covers every option: shuttle bus, private car, long-distance coach, and self-drive, with exact fares, departure points, and return details.

1. Where Is Wolong and How Does It Fit Into a Sichuan Trip?

Wolong Shenshuping is not a city attraction. The drive from Chengdu is 130km, with the final 55km on a winding two-lane canyon road after Yingxiu Town. Dujiangyan is the staging point for every route to Wolong. From Chengdu you take the Duwen Expressway northwest to Dujiangyan (about 60 minutes), pass through Yingxiu Town, then follow Provincial Road 303 along the Pitiao River canyon into Gengda Town.

Wolong sits on the main road to Mount Siguniang (四姑娘山) — the route runs Chengdu → Dujiangyan → Yingxiu → Wolong → Siguniangshan Town, covering about 200km in total. Visitors continuing to Siguniang drive a further ~100km (2 hours) along the G350 after Wolong. Many clients combine both on a 3–4 day western Sichuan loop.

The most common multi-day combinations:

• Dujiangyan Irrigation System or Qingcheng Mountain + Wolong (overnight in Dujiangyan)
• Wolong + Mount Siguniang (overnight in Gengda Town or Siguniangshan Town)

Yingxiu Town (映秀镇) is on the road between Dujiangyan and Wolong — it was the epicentre of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. The Xuankou Middle School memorial, where collapsed buildings have been preserved as-is, is a short stop on the way back that many visitors find worthwhile.

Same-day trips from Chengdu are possible if you leave by 07:00 and accept returning after 18:00.

2. Direct Shuttle Bus — The Most Popular Option

For most independent visitors, the direct shuttle (直通车) is the default choice — and it works, as long as you know what to expect. Both operators are seat-only, no guide, no entrance ticket. You book the day before through a Chinese-language platform, and sometime between 19:00 and 21:00 that evening you’ll get an SMS confirming the driver, plate number, and exact boarding time. If no SMS arrives, don’t panic — open WeChat Mini Program 惠旅智游 → 用车查询 → enter your booking phone number.

One thing that catches people out: the two shuttles drop you at different points. The Chunxi Road shuttle parks at the ticket office (售票处), which is 1km uphill from the actual entrance gate. The Xinnanmen shuttle goes all the way to the entrance gate car park (检票口停车场). If you’re on the Chunxi Road bus, don’t attempt the uphill walk — at 1,700m with luggage, it takes 40 minutes. Take the park golf cart instead (CNY 20 round-trip / CNY 10 one-way).

The Xinnanmen operator also sells a combined bus + admission ticket for CNY 175 (CNY 90 bus + CNY 85 admission). If you’re on the 07:00 departure, this is worth it — you skip the ticket queue and walk straight to the gate.

⚠️ One thing to know before you book: Since late 2025, both shuttles have been making a 20-minute stop at a shop called 耿达熊猫驿站 (Gengda Panda Post), 3.7km before the base. The stop appears to be a commercial arrangement — you're not obliged to buy anything, but you can't skip it. It means arriving before 09:00 is no longer realistic on either shuttle. Factor this in if the morning feeding window matters to you.

Operator A: Chunxi Road Shuttle (春熙路米瑞广场)

Book on Dianping (大众点评), Trip.com or WeChat Mini Program 卧龙大熊猫苑 → 景区直通车.

Outbound:

• Departures: ~07:00 (confirm from SMS the night before)
• Boarding: 春熙路米瑞广场天桥下 (under the footbridge at Mirui Plaza, Chunxi Road)
• Drop-off: ticket office car park (售票厅下面停车场)
• Arrival: ~09:20 (after compulsory 20-min shopping stop at 耿达熊猫驿站, 3.7km before base)

Return:

• Departures: 17:00–19:00 window from Shenshuping (confirm your slot from the SMS)
• Drop-off: 春熙路 (Chunxi Road area)

Fares: CNY 48 one-way / CNY 88 round-trip

If no SMS arrives: WeChat Mini Program 惠旅智游 → 用车查询 → enter your booking phone number or name.

Operator B: Xinnanmen Shuttle (新南门车站)

Book on Dianping (大众点评), or at Xinnanmen Bus Station ticket counter.

Outbound:

• Departure: ~07:00 (confirm from SMS the night before)
• Boarding: 新南门地铁站C口外，新南门车站团队通道 (outside Exit C of Xinnanmen Metro Station, Line 3). Bus destination board reads: 耿达 (Gengda).
• Drop-off: entrance gate car park (检票口停车场) — no golf cart needed

Return:

• Three slots: 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 from Shenshuping
• Drop-off: 新南门车站 (Xinnanmen Bus Station)
• Important: the SMS confirmation has a known issue — some passengers who booked 17:00 were notified of 15:00 instead. Read the SMS carefully before planning your base visit around a departure time.

Fares: CNY 45 one-way / CNY 90 round-trip / CNY 175 bus + admission combo

Luggage storage at ticket office: Lockers (P3) in front of the ticket office — small CNY 10, medium CNY 20, large CNY 30.

3. Long-Distance Public Bus

The long-distance buses are cheaper than the shuttle, but they come with trade-offs most independent foreign visitors underestimate. Ticket counters operate in Chinese only, machines accept domestic ID cards only, and the afternoon services from Chadianzi arrive at Shenshuping just as the base is closing — they only make sense if you’re planning to stay overnight in Gengda Town. The 07:00 from Xinnanmen is the exception: it drops you directly at Shenshuping at a reasonable time, and it’s genuinely usable. Book in advance on Ctrip (携程) or at the station counter; bring your passport.

Route 1 — Xinnanmen Bus Station → Shenshuping (新南门客运站 → 神树坪)

• Departure: 07:00
• Boarding: 新南门地铁站C口外，新南门客运站 (Exit C of Xinnanmen Metro Station, Line 3)
• Drops you directly at Shenshuping — no transfer needed
• Best for hotels near Tianfu Square, East Gate, or South Gate

Route 2 — Chadianzi Bus Station → Shenshuping (茶店子客运站 → 神树坪)

• Departure: 13:30
• Boarding: Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站), Metro Line 2
• Drops you directly at Shenshuping
• Best for hotels near North or West Chengdu
• Note: arrives at Shenshuping at ~16:00, as the base is closing. Only useful if you plan to stay overnight in Gengda Town.

Route 3 — Chadianzi Bus Station → Gengda Town (茶店子客运站 → 耿达)

• Departure: 13:30
• Boarding: Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站), Metro Line 2
• Tell the driver: 在熊猫广场下车 (“get off at Panda Plaza”)
• From Panda Plaza to the base: 3–5km by local taxi (~CNY 30–50, ~10 min). Do not walk — uphill mountain road at 1,700m; takes 40–60 minutes on foot.

Route 4 — Dujiangyan Bus Station → Gengda Town (都江堰客运站 → 耿达)

• Departures: 15:20 and 16:20
• Boarding: Dujiangyan Bus Station (都江堰客运站)
• Tell the driver: 在熊猫广场下车 (“get off at Panda Plaza”)
• Transfer to base same as Route 3
• Works well with a Dujiangyan morning: take the afternoon bus to Gengda Town, overnight, and arrive at Wolong’s gate when it opens at 09:00. (Check current opening status of Dujiangyan Panda Base before planning.)

4. Private Car or Charter Car

The most reliable option for international visitors — no Chinese app, no fixed schedule.

From Chengdu: 130km, 2 hours under normal conditions. Allow 2.5 hours on weekends and public holidays. Route: Duwen Expressway → Dujiangyan → Yingxiu Town → Provincial Road 303 canyon → Gengda Town.

From Dujiangyan: 55km, 1–1.5 hours. We route clients this way consistently: overnight in Dujiangyan, depart 08:00, arrive at Shenshuping before 09:30. In June 2025, Peter and his teenage son Casper from the UK did this — they reached the base by 09:15 and were first in line for the panda kindergarten area.

Navigation: Use 中华熊猫苑耿达神树坪基地 in Amap. “Wolong Panda Base” in English apps sometimes routes to the old Hetaoping base, closed since 2008.

5. Taxi — Best for Groups, Needs Advance Booking

Fares are CNY 300–500 from Chengdu and CNY 130–200 from Dujiangyan. Metered taxis refuse this trip outright — you need to find a driver willing to negotiate a flat fare, and that takes time. Book at least half a day in advance and confirm a pickup time for the return, since taxis at the base gate are not guaranteed. For a group of 3–4 splitting the cost, a taxi becomes price-competitive with individual shuttle tickets and gives you full control over departure time.

6. Self-Drive — Only With a Chinese Temporary Permit

Route: Duwen Expressway → exit at Yingxiu → Provincial Road 303 north → Gengda Town. Input 中华熊猫苑耿达神树坪基地 into Amap or Baidu Maps.

PR303 is single-lane in places with frequent truck traffic. In summer (June–August), check 四川交通 WeChat the night before for rockfall or road closures. In winter, chains may be needed above 2,000m. Paid parking is at the scenic area car park next to the ticket office.

Motion sickness: Take medication before leaving Yingxiu Town — once on the canyon road it is too late.

7. Which Option Is Right for You?

8. Road Conditions, Crowds, and What to Pack

PR303 from Yingxiu to Gengda is paved but narrow. The section between Yingxiu and Wolong Tunnel carries the heaviest truck traffic — quarry vehicles and construction lorries. The final 45 minutes into Gengda is tight mountain switchbacks above a river gorge, steep valley walls on one side, the Pitiao River dropping away on the other. This section runs 15–20 minutes slower than navigation apps predict; passing oncoming trucks requires pulling into lay-bys. After heavy summer rain, rockfalls cause delays of an hour or more — check 四川交通 WeChat the evening before if rain is forecast.

In winter (December–February), the upper section can carry snow and ice. The same applies to the road onward to Mount Siguniang, where the Balang Tunnel approach climbs above 3,500m.

Temperature: Gengda sits at 1,700m — 8–10°C cooler than Chengdu in summer. Bring a light jacket.

Crowds: The base cap is 12,000 daily — never reached as of 2025. Avoid the second half of June, all of July, the first half of August, the first week of May, and the first week of October for the lightest crowds. In winter on weekdays, visitor numbers can drop below 100.

Shuttle buses in winter (December–February): Direct 直通车 shuttles may reduce schedules or suspend. The Chadianzi 13:30 bus and private car are more reliable in the off-season.

9. Is It Worth Stopping in Dujiangyan First?

Almost always, yes. Dujiangyan is 55km from Wolong; Chengdu is 130km. An overnight in Dujiangyan means you leave at 08:00 instead of 07:00, arrive before 09:30 for the morning feeding window, and don’t spend half your day in a car.

For the panda volunteer program (starts 08:30), we use this structure with every client without exception. Day 1 in Dujiangyan — Irrigation System, Qingcheng Mountain, or both. Day 2 depart 08:00 by private car, arrive Shenshuping before 09:30. (By shuttle from Dujiangyan this is not possible — both shuttles originate from Chengdu and include the 耿达熊猫驿站 stop.) The Route 4 afternoon bus (15:20 or 16:20 from Dujiangyan) fits neatly into this: you reach Gengda Town by early evening, overnight locally, and walk to the base gate when it opens at 09:00.
