How To Get To Panda Valley

How to Get to Dujiangyan Panda Valley from Chengdu (All in One Guide)

Before you read: Dujiangyan has two separate panda facilities that are constantly confused online. This guide is for Panda Valley (熊猫谷) — the wild-release training centre run by the Chengdu Research Base, currently open. If you are looking for the Dujiangyan Panda Base (熊猫乐园) — the rescue and rehabilitation centre where the panda volunteer programme runs — that facility is CLOSED for renovation as of April 2026 with no confirmed reopening date. See our Dujiangyan Panda Base vs Panda Valley guide for the full comparison.

Dujiangyan Panda Valley (熊猫谷) sits 50 – 65 km from central Chengdu in a forested hillside in Yutang Town, Dujiangyan. Getting there independently is possible but involves real compromises — the train requires three transfers and Chinese-language interfaces throughout, while the only direct bus is a fixed combo ticket with a no-refund policy. We cover all four options honestly below, including when a private car makes more sense than either public transport route.

1. Option A: High-Speed Train + Local Shuttle

The train runs on a fixed schedule, costs the least, and requires no advance booking. The downside: three transfers, all with Chinese-language interfaces. For visitors comfortable navigating independently, it works well.

Step 1 — Get to Xipu Station (犀浦站)

Take Metro Line 2 or Line 6 to Xipu Station. From central Chengdu (Chunxi Road area), this takes 30–35 minutes. Follow the signs inside the station to the intercity rail platform.

Step 2 — Intercity rail: Xipu → Dujiangyan or Lidui Park Station

Two stations serve this route:

  • Dujiangyan Station (都江堰站): 25 minutes, CNY 10–15. Take Bus 14 (都江堰14路) outside the exit to Panda Valley — CNY 2, 20–25 minutes. Or taxi/DiDi from the station: CNY 10–15, 18 minutes.
  • Lidui Park Station (离堆公园站): One stop further, 30–35 minutes total from Xipu. Exit via the east side of Yangtianguang Square (仰天广场东侧出口) — you will see the “selfie panda” photo installation directly outside, a useful landmark. Taxi to Panda Valley from here: CNY 8–10, 10–12 minutes. This exit is the better starting point if you plan to visit the Dujiangyan Irrigation System in the afternoon — the main entrance (一号门) is a short walk away.

Trains run every 30 minutes. Tickets at the station window or via the 12306 app (Chinese only — have a translation tool ready).

Step 3 — Bus 14 or taxi to Panda Valley gate

Bus 14: CNY 2, pay on board, no booking. Taxi from either station: CNY 10–15.

Total cost (one way): CNY 16–22. Total journey time: 75–90 minutes. To catch the 09:30 morning feeding, leave central Chengdu by 07:45.

2. Option B: HiPanda Combo Bus (Chunxi Road → Panda Valley → Dujiangyan → Back)

HiPanda currently operates a single combo route from central Chengdu covering Panda Valley and Dujiangyan in one day. This is the only direct bus service from central Chengdu to Panda Valley — there is no HiPanda single-leg ticket for Panda Valley alone.

Boarding point: Chunxi Road / IFS, Metro Line 2 Exit C (春熙路地铁C口). Look for the yellow HiPanda ticketing stand.

Booking

HiPanda WeChat mini-programme (Chinese only)

Departure times and the number of daily runs vary by season. In peak season (July–August) some dates show only a single midday departure. Check the HiPanda WeChat mini-programme booking screen for the exact schedule on your date before committing.

Before booking, three things worth knowing:

Departure timing depends on passenger load. Buses sometimes wait before departing. If the bus departs late, the already-short Panda Valley window gets compressed further. If arriving before the 09:30 morning feeding matters to you, the train gives a more predictable arrival.

Refunds and changes are effectively unavailable. Multiple visitors report that the mini-programme does not allow cancellation after rebooking. Customer service is difficult to reach by phone and does not reliably respond via WeChat or Xiaohongshu.

The booking interface is Chinese only. If you are not comfortable navigating a Chinese mini-programme, ask someone to assist you or book a private car instead.

3. Option C: DiDi or Taxi

A DiDi or taxi from central Chengdu to Panda Valley costs CNY 120–160 and takes 60–90 minutes. For groups of 3 or more, the per-person cost becomes competitive with the train. For solo or pair travellers, the train is significantly cheaper.

Unlike at the main Chengdu Research Base, DiDi pick-up and drop-off at Panda Valley is not a problem — the app works fine for the return journey here.

4. Option D: Private Car or Guided Day Trip

A private car from central Chengdu to Panda Valley takes 60–90 minutes. For a group of 3 or more, it removes every friction point: door-to-door pickup, no transfers, no Chinese-language interfaces, flexible timing, and a driver who waits while you visit. Pricing varies by itinerary, season, and vehicle type — contact us for a quote.

We organise private day trips to Panda Valley regularly, typically combined with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System in the afternoon.

Budget travellers comfortable navigating independently

Groups of 3+ wanting flexibility

Families; groups; smooth full-day itinerary

No public transport option to Panda Valley is seamless for international visitors. The train is cheaper and more reliable than HiPanda, but requires three transfers in Chinese. HiPanda is (to some extent) door-to-door but carries real risks around timing and refunds. For most of our clients visiting Panda Valley, a private car is the right call — especially when combined with Dujiangyan in the same day.

6. Pairing with Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Dujiangyan
Dujiangyan

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰景区) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is 3 km from Panda Valley. There is a tourist shuttle bus from the Panda Valley gate to Dujiangyan at CNY 10 per person, but read this before you board.

The shuttle only goes to Gate 1 (一号门), near Lidui Park. If you want to start from Gate 6 (六号门) or visit Qinyanlou (秦堰楼) at the upper end of the scenic area, you will need to board a second shuttle inside — another CNY 10 per person each way. Two people going Panda Valley → Gate 1 → Gate 6 end up paying CNY 40 total in shuttles. A taxi directly from Panda Valley to wherever you want to start inside Dujiangyan costs CNY 10–15 and drops you exactly where you need to be. Take the taxi.

The most practical combination: Panda Valley in the morning (arrive by 08:30 for the 09:30 feeding), then taxi directly to your preferred Dujiangyan entrance in the afternoon. By private car, the driver handles the transfer and waits at each stop — we organize this itinerary regularly for our clients. Contact us to arrange.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct bus from Chengdu to Panda Valley?

HiPanda operates the only direct bus service — but it is a fixed combo ticket (CNY 68 per adult, CNY 34 for children under 1.2m), not a single-leg trip. The route covers Chunxi Road → Panda Valley → Dujiangyan → back to Chunxi Road or Kuanzhai Alley in one day. Departure times and number of daily runs vary by season; check the HiPanda WeChat mini-programme (Chinese only) for the exact schedule on your date. There is no official Chengdu Transit Group service to Panda Valley. HiPanda refunds are effectively unavailable after booking — if there is any chance your plans will change, the train or a private car is the safer choice.

How much is the train from Chengdu to Dujiangyan?

The intercity rail from Xipu Station (犀浦站) to Dujiangyan Station takes 25 minutes and costs CNY 10–15. Add the metro fare to Xipu (CNY 4–6 from central Chengdu) and Bus 14 from Dujiangyan Station to Panda Valley (CNY 2). You can also alight one stop earlier at Lidui Park Station (离堆公园站) and take a taxi for CNY 8–10.

Can I visit Panda Valley without planning transport in advance?

For the train, no advance booking is needed — buy tickets at Xipu Station or via the 12306 app on the day. For HiPanda, same-day availability is not guaranteed on weekends; book at least the day before. For a private car, contact us in advance and we arrange everything.

Is Panda Valley the same as Dujiangyan Panda Base?

No — they are two completely separate facilities in Dujiangyan run by different organisations. Panda Valley (熊猫谷) is operated by the Chengdu Research Base and focuses on wild-release training. Dujiangyan Panda Base (熊猫乐园) is run by the CCRCGP and focuses on rescue and elderly panda care — it is currently closed for renovation with no confirmed reopening date. See our full comparison guide for the details.

Can I do a panda volunteer experience at Panda Valley?

No — Panda Valley does not offer a tourist volunteer programme. The hands-on panda keeper experience is only available at the Dujiangyan Panda Base (熊猫乐园), which is currently closed for renovation with no confirmed reopening date, and at Wolong and Bifengxia. See our panda volunteer guide for current availability across all bases.

Is Panda Valley or the main Chengdu Research Base easier to reach?

The main Chengdu Research Base is significantly easier — five official direct bus lines from central Chengdu at CNY 8, plus metro feeder buses at CNY 2. Panda Valley requires 75–90 minutes via three transfers, or a 2-hour HiPanda bus. For visitors uncomfortable navigating independently in Chinese, a private car removes all friction. See our Chengdu panda bases guide to compare all options.
